Alo Brasil: Abre A Janela

ABRE A JANELA
Release Date: September 23, 2006

The title of our debut album, "Abre a Janela" ("Opens the Window" in Brazilian Portuguese), reflects our intention to bring a fresh, expansive outlook to American and Brazilian audiences. "Abre a Janela" is a true world fusion album, which showcases the diverse talents of some of Philadelphia's finest musicians. An amalgamation of classic and original material, live and studio recordings, vintage and contemporary sounds, "Abre a Janela" features the many perspectives of Brazilian music that have inspired our playing and that have connected us to the musical spirit of Brazil.

Various members of Alô Brasil have collaborated with, or played behind Jill Scott, Ursula Rucker, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Mongo Santamaria, Max Roach's M'boom, Amelia Pedroso, and Johnny Pacheco, among others. Since over more than two-thirds of the group are percussionists, many selections reveal a natural affinity for rhythm-based music that highlight the tremendous African influence in both traditional and popular Brazilian and American music. The original compositions and arrangements are Alô Brasil's own expressions of the Brazilian sound, which over the years has come to infuse our lives.

This album also features several Brazilian guest artists, including singers Lazzo Matumbi and Rose Moraes, as well as master percussionists Giba Conceição and the late Dom um Romão, whose musical contributions enliven the album with the spirit of the Brazilian voice and heart. It is in this spirit that Alô Brasil continues to preserve these wonderful sonic traditions and cultivate the ever-growing musical dialogue between Brazil and the United States.

Recorded 2004 through 2005 by Rittenhouse Recording. Produced by Jim Hamilton for Rittenhouse Recording International.
